As the world becomes more advanced in technology, so do the crimes being committed. Recently, a Chula Vista man was sentenced for his role in blowing up ATMs in San Diego County, resulting in a significant loss of money for businesses and banks.
According to the Department of Justice, Marcos Melendez, also known as "Blue," was sentenced to 70 months in prison for his involvement in a string of ATM explosions throughout San Diego County. The explosions occurred between October 2019 and January 2020, causing extensive damage to the machines and surrounding buildings. The investigation revealed that Melendez and his co-conspirators used homemade explosive devices, causing a loss of over $100,000.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael J. Desrochers stated, "The defendant's actions caused significant harm to local businesses and financial institutions, who were already struggling during a pandemic. This sentence sends a message that these types of crimes will not be tolerated in our community."
Melendez's sentence serves as a reminder that committing such crimes has severe consequences. The Justice Department and law enforcement agencies are actively pursuing those involved in these types of offenses, and perpetrators will be held accountable for their actions.
It is essential to note that blowing up ATMs is not only illegal but also extremely dangerous. The explosions can cause severe harm to those nearby and have the potential to cause significant property damage. These incidents also result in financial losses for businesses and banks, which can have a ripple effect throughout the community.
The Justice Department urges individuals to report any suspicious activity around ATMs, and for businesses and banks to implement security measures to deter such crimes from occurring.
As technology continues to evolve, it is crucial to remain vigilant and aware of the potential risks and dangers associated with it. The Justice Department and law enforcement agencies are committed to keeping the community safe and ensuring that those who commit crimes are held accountable for their actions.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jane Smith prosecuted the case.
